Above: A nice young Flounder in one of aquariums, when one of us snapped this picture.
Comments: These Flounders are very unique and odd. Their body is completely flat, and their eyes are located on the top of their body, while the mouth and gills are located underneath.
Origin: Flounders are found throughout the world.
Maximum Size: In aquariums, these Flounders can grow to a maximum of about 6" long.
Behaviors: Most Flounders are very shy and tend to camouflage into their surroundings. Flounders are not aggressive to other fish.
Compatibility: Some recommended tank mates include other slightly Brackish water fish like some Puffers and other wild fish. They typically prefer less tankmates.

Temperature: Flounders can live pretty well from about 72 to 86 degrees F., but they're probably most comfortable from about 76 to 80 degrees F.

Feeding: Flounders prefer live food such as Black Worms and small Earth Worms plus live or frozen shrimp and blackworms.
They will also eat small fish and Ghost Shrimp.

Water Conditions: Flounders prefer a slightly Brackish water tank. Probably a pH of about 7 with moderate hardness is best.
Most water in the US seems to be OK, so it's probably best NOT to adjust the pH or the hardness of the water.
Here in our facilities the water is hard and the pH is usually about 7.8. We ship them in this water.

Aquarium Size: It's probably best to house these fish in at least a 10-gallon aquarium at first, but as they grow you should look into upgrading to a bigger the aquarium.
Decor: Flounders typically like sandy bottoms, since they suck onto any flat surface, it's important to make sure your substrate isn't too sharp.
Live plants are beautiful, improve the water quality, and are enjoyed by Flounders.
Water Sprite and Java Ferns are very good plants for any aquariums. Non-toxic driftwood is also very good.

Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended.
A Penguin 100B in an aquarium with 10 to 20-gallons of water is ideal, and a Penguin 200B is the right size for a 20 to 30-gallon aquarium.

The addition of Lava Rocks will keep nitrates in the ideal range. Click here to learn more about using Lava Rocks in aquariums.
Life Span: Flounders live for a few years.
Gender: It's hard to tell them apart, but by keeping many you may be able to spot the plumper Flounders, which may be females, filling with eggs.
Breeding: Flounders are known to breed in captivity, if conditions are right.
Popularity: Flounders are somewhat popular in the hobby.
Names: The scientific name for these Flounder is Trinectes maculatus, or perhaps a closely related species.
Variations: There are many Flounder species.
