Comments: These are fabulous looking fish, with unique characteristics.

Origin: This Barracuda is found in South America and are wild fish. But now you can find them living in aquariums all over the world.

Maximum Size: In aquariums, this Barracuda can grow to be about 11" long, and sometimes larger if fed properly and the water quality is good.

Behaviors: They're usually aggressive fish, they will eat anything that will fit in their mouths.

Compatibility: Some recommended tankmates include Arowana and other big fish.

Temperature: They live best from about 75 to 80-degrees F. with 78 being perhaps ideal.

Feeding: Premium Fish Food Pellets is best to feed to these Barracudas. Smaller sized pellets, when they're small, and larger sized pellets, when they're bigger.

Water Conditions: They are used to softer alkaline water, but they can adapt to most types of water, and so as usual it's best not to try to change the pH or alkalinity of they're water.

Aquarium Size: These Barracuda will do well in an aquarium with at least 70-gallons of water when small, but they will eventually need to live in an aquarium with at least 100-gallons of water.

Decor: They don't need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.

Live plants are beautiful and improve the water quality, but these Barracuda are known to rip up plants.

Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended.

Most 80-gallon aquariums have room along the back for two Penguin 350B Filters, and this is sort of a minimal set up for these fish.

Better is a 120, 150, or 200-gallon aquarium with as many Penguin 350B Filters as will fit across the back.

Life Span: These Barracudas can live for several years. Keep the water conditions excellent and feed them premium foods, and they may live even longer lives.

Gender: It's difficult to tell males from females. When breeding occurs, it may be easier to tell, because the female may be rounder.

Breeding: There are no known reports of this wild fish breeding in captivity. They have been known to breed in large ponds.

Popularity: These fish are rare and so not too popular in the hobby.

Names: The scientific name for the Yellow Tail Barracuda is Acestrorhynchus falcirostris.

Variations: we have not noticed any.
