Above: A young Leopard Cactus Plecostomus, L114 and LDA007, or a closely related species, that was looking for food in one of our aquariums, when one of us snapped this picture.

Comments: This is a Premium Pet Fish, and we never see Premium Fish like this in any of the live fish stores or in the online fish stores that we visit.

Premium Pet Fish are more energetic, hardier, and have brighter colors with a beautiful metallic sheen.

Origin: This Plecostomus is found in the Rio Demini in the Rio Negro drainage in northern Brazil in the Amazon Rainforest.

Maximum Size: This Pleco can grow to be about 9" long , including its tail.

Behaviors: These Catfish are not aggressive. They will usually move around pretty actively during the day, but some of them seem to hide during the day and become more active at night.

When there's food to be eaten, they become very active looking for it.

Compatibility: Recommended tank mates include any community fish.

Temperature: They live well from about 75 to 82 degrees F., but they're probably most comfortable at about 78 to 80 degrees F.

Feeding: This species needs rich food pellets with adequate protein from fish and shrimp plus some plant matter for a well rounded diet.

Water Conditions: This Plecostomus is from the Rio Demini in the Rio Negro drainage in northern Brazil.

The Rio Negro is a black-water river with low pH and low minerals. So this fish needs to live in that type of water.

Most water in the US has a much higher pH and is much harder, so it's probably best to adjust the pH and the hardness of the water.

A good way to do that is by diluting your local tap water with R/O = Reverse Osmosis water. Usually 1 part of tap water and 3 or 4-parts of RO-water is good.

Then slowly add white vinegar, until the pH is about 5.5 to 6.5. So you'll need a way to measure the pH with pH paper or an electronic pH-tester.

Aquarium-Safe Driftwood will usually discolor the water, adding tannins and other organic chemicals, which will be good for this and other black water fish species.

Aquarium Size: It's best to house these fish in at least a 40-gallon tank, when they're less than 3" long, but a bigger aquarium is always better.

Eventually this Pleco will need a much larger aquarium with at least 80-gallons of water. They produce lots of waste and will require frequent partial water changes.

Decor: These Catfish do not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.

Live Plants are beautiful and improve the water quality and are recommended for this species.

Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended.

A Penguin 350B Filter in an aquarium with 40-gallons of water is OK to start with a few of these fish, when they're small.

But eventually they'll need a much bigger aquarium with powerful re-circulation to stir and aerate the water to match their natural environment.

Remember this species will need frequent partial water changes. Probably a 20% water change at least twice a week is needed.

Life Span: These Pleco can live for several years, probably many years provided they're fed the appropriate food and kept in a large aquarium with excellent filtration and high water flow of freshened water with the right chemistry.

Gender: As they mature females become plumper.

Breeding: These Plecos have been successfully bred in the aquarium hobby.

Popularity: This Pleco is relatively common and popular for a black-water fish.

Names: The species name is Pseudacanthicus cf. leopardus, L114 and LDA007.

Variations: This Pleco species lives across a wide range and their pattern of markings and colors vary geographically and often vary at a specific location.
