Comments: These are fabulous looking fish that are really living torpedoes, and they swim all the time, which is very cool.

Origin: This Sabalo Barracuda is found living across a wide region in the rain forests of northern South America, and now there are also many of them living in aquariums all over the world.

Maximum Size: In aquariums, this Barracuda can grow to be about 11" long, and sometimes larger if fed properly, and if the water quality is good.

Behaviors: Sabalo Barracudas are aggressive predators, and they'll eat anything that will fit in their mouths.

Compatibility: Best housed alone, because they can be aggressive to their tankmates, but some recommended tankmates include Arowanas and other big fish.

Temperature: Lives best from about 75 to 80-degrees F. with 78 being perhaps ideal.

Feeding: Premium Fish Food Pellets is best to feed to Barracuda. Smaller sized pellets when young, and larger sized pellets when bigger, is the ideal food for these fish.

Water Conditions: Water with pH about 6.0 to 7.5 with low to medium hardness, but these fish can adapt to most types of water. So as usual it's best not to try to change the pH or hardness.

Here in our aquariums we are keeping them now at pH 7.8 and very hard water.

Aquarium Size: This Barracuda will do fine in an aquarium with at least 70-gallons of water when small, but will eventually need to live in an aquarium with at least 100-gallons of water.

Decor: these Barracuda do not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.

Live plants are beautiful and improve the water quality, but this Barracuda may rip up plants.

Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended.

Most 80-gallon aquariums have room along the back for two Penguin 350B Filters, and this is sort of a minimal wild fish set up.

Better is a 120, 150, or 200-gallon aquarium with as many Penguin 350B Filters as will fit across the back.

Life Span: This Barracuda can live for several years. Keep the water conditions excellent and feed them premium foods, and they may live even longer lives.

Gender: It's difficult to tell males from females, but when breeding occurs, it may be easier to tell their gender, because the females fill with eggs and look plumper.

Breeding: There are no known reports of this wild fish breeding in captivity. They have been known to breed in large ponds.
