Above: In the picture is a nice premium quality Purple Spotted Gudgeon shown swimming in one of our aquariums.
Comments: This species is pretty, interesting, hardy, and fun to watch.
Origin: This species comes from New Guinea.
Maximum Size: 6" long
Behaviors: hopping along the bottom or climbing on rocks, plants, or driftwood. males quarrel with each other but do no harm.
Feeding: as usual feed them premium fish food flakes and small pellets. Click here for about premium fish foods.
So it's probably best not fiddle with your water, unless it's very high in minerals, then you might add some deionized water to dilute the minerals.
Aquarium Size: a few can live in 30-gallon aquarium, when they're small. But eventually, when they're full grown, they'll need to live in an aquarium with at least 60-gallons of water.Decor: they do not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.
Click here for more about aquarium gravel. They will also need rocks or driftwood to climb on.
Live plants are beautiful and improve the water quality.
Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended.
Most 30-gallon aquariums will do well with one Penguin 200B Filter. But this fish is from rapidly flowing streams, so a Penguin 350B Filter is probably even better, because it will create more water flow.
Eventually they need to live in an aquarium with at least 50-gallons of water and as many Penguin 350B Filters as will fit across the back.

The addition of Lava Rocks will keep nitrates in the ideal range. Click here to learn more about using Lava Rocks in aquariums.
Life Span: unknown to us but probably at least a few years and hopefully more.
Gender: When mature the males show some color differences during breeding.
Breeding: The female lays her eggs on a flat surface, then is chased away by the male, and he will then care for the eggs. Click here for a lot more about breeding various tropical fish in aquariums.
Popularity: this fish is rarely seen in aquariums, but it should be more popular.Variations: none known to us.
Names: the scientific name is Mogurnda adspersa.
