Above: In the picture is a nice African Tiger Fish swimming in one of our aquariums, when one of us snapped this picture.
Comments: These are fabulous fish with very sharp teeth.
Origin: Tiger Fish are found in Africa and are wild fish that are caught by skilled collectors and shipped here to us, and there are many living in aquariums all over the world.
Maximum Size: In aquariums, Tiger Fish can grow to be about 30" long, which is an extreme size.
So these fish are best for a very experienced aquarist or kept in huge public aquariums.
Behaviors: Tiger Fish are usually very aggressive fish, which is why they should be kept alone.
Compatibility: These fish should be kept in a species only tank, because these fish will attack anything that might be in the tank with them.
Some catfish can be kept with this fish depending on aggressiveness and size.

Temperature: Tiger Fish live best from about 75 to 80-degrees F. with 78 being perhaps ideal.

Feeding: Premium Fish Food Pellets is best to feed to Tiger Fish.
Smaller sized pellets when they're young and larger sized pellets when they've grown bigger, is the ideal food for these fish.

Water Conditions: They probably do best in water with a neutral pH of about 7.0 and low to moderate hardness.
But these fish can adapt to most of that in North America, and so as usual it's best not to try to change the pH or alkalinity.
Click here for a lot more information about aquarium water conditions.
Aquarium Size: Tiger Fish will eventually need to live in an extremely large aquarium with thousands of gallons of water.
Decor: Tiger Fish do not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.
Click here for more about aquarium gravel.
Live plants are beautiful and improve the water quality, but Tiger Fish will usually rip plants up, so most aquariums with Tiger Fish do not have live plants.
Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended.
Most 80-gallon aquariums have room along the back for two Penguin 350B Filters, and this is sort of a minimal set up for this fish with it's small.
Better is a 120, 150, or 200-gallon aquarium with as many Penguin 350B Filters as will fit across the back.

The addition of Lava Rocks will keep nitrates in the ideal range.

Life Span: Tiger Fish can live for several years.
Breeding: There are no known reports of this wild fish breeding in captivity.
