These fish are MONSTER FISH that will grow to a very large size.
They are very aggressive and should be kept only by expert aquarists.
This is a WILD fish that is captured in Africa and shipped to us.

Comments: These are fabulous predatory fish with long sharp teeth.
Origin: Tiger Fish are found living throughout Africa, where a few are captured and shipped to aquarists throughout the world.
Maximum Size: Goliath Tiger Fish can grow to be about 80" long and even bigger, which is an extreme size, so these fish are best for a very experienced aquarist with a huge aquarium.
Behaviors: Tiger Fish are usually very aggressive fish, which is why they should probably be kept alone.
Compatibility: These fish should be kept in a species only tank, because they'll attack any other fish that's in the aquarium with them.
Some catfish with prickly fins may be able to survive with this fish.

Temperature: Tiger Fish live best from about 75 to 80-degrees F. with 78 being perhaps ideal.

Feeding: Premium Fish Food Pellets is best to feed to Tiger Fish. Smaller sized pellets, when they're small, and larger sized pellets when they've grown larger, is the ideal food for these fish.

Water Conditions: They've adapted to a wide range of water conditions throughout Africa, so they can easily adapt to most types of water in aquariums, and as usual it's best not to try to change the pH or alkalinity.
Click here for a lot more information about aquarium water conditions.
Aquarium Size: even young small Tiger Fish need a large aquarium and eventually need to live in a huge aquarium.Decor: Tiger Fish do not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.
Click here for more about aquarium gravel.
Live plants are beautiful and improve the water quality, but Tiger Fish will usually rip plants up, so most aquariums with this species do not have live plants.
Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended. Most 80-gallon aquariums have room along the back for at least two Penguin 350B Filters, and this is sort of a minimal set-up for a small young Tiger Fish.
Better is a 120, 150, or 200-gallon aquarium with as many Penguin 350B Filters as will fit across the back.
But eventually this fish will need a huge aquarium with a large advanced filtering system.

The addition of Lava Rocks will keep nitrates in the ideal range. Click here to learn more about using Lava Rocks in aquariums.
Life Span: Tiger Fish can live for several years. Keep the water conditions excellent and feed them premium foods, and they may live even longer lives.
Gender: we don't know how to tell males from females.
Breeding: There are no known reports of this fish breeding in captivity.
Click here for a lot more about breeding various tropical fish in aquariums.
Popularity: These fish are not too popular due to their size and special needs.
Names: The scientific name is Hydrocynus goliath.
Variations: This fish occurs across an immense region of Africa, so we expect there are variations, but we've not actually seen any.
