Comments: Yellowtail Phantom Tetra are examples of just one of our Premium Pet Fish, and we rarely see Premium Tetras like this one in any of the live fish stores or the online fish stores that we visit.
Premium Pet Fish are more energetic, hardier and have brighter colors with a beautiful metallic sheen.

Origin: These fish's ancestors lived in the southwestern part of the Amazon Rainforest in South America, but these fish were spawned and raised on a famous fish farm, and Yellowtail Phantom Tetras like these now live in many aquariums throughout most of the world.
Maximum Size: This fish species can grow to be about 0.75" long including the tail, which makes them one of the smallest Tetras species and ideal fish for Nano Aquariums.

Behaviors: These guys are active and quarrel a bit with each other but don't do much harm.
Compatibility: Some recommended tank mates include, small fish like Guppies, Platys, Corydoras Catfish, Honey Gouramis, and other Nano Fish.
Click here to read more about compatible groups of pet fish.
Temperature: They can live pretty well from about 72 to 80 degrees F., but they're probably most comfortable from about 75 to 78 degrees F.

Feeding: Premium Fish Food Flakes. It's probably best to crush the flakes into smaller bits just before feeding these fish.
Or put a teaspoon of flakes into a plastic bag, let most of the air out of the bag, seal the bag with a rubber band, then massage the flakes through the bag, until the flakes are smaller bits, then feed those small bits to small fish.
Be sure to seal the bag between feedings, so the powder will remain fresh.

Water Conditions: This fish seems to be tolerant of a wide range of water conditions. Probably a pH of about 6.5 with very little hardness is best.
Most water in the US has a higher pH and is harder but seems to be OK, so it's probably best NOT to adjust the pH or the hardness of the water.
Here in our facilities the water is hard and the pH is usually about 7.8.
We ship them in this water.
Click here for a lot more information about aquarium water conditions.
Aquarium Size: It's probably best to house these fish in at least a 5-gallon nano tank, but bigger is better, because they quarrel with each other a bit, and more space lessens their quarreling.
Keep at most one fish per gallon. This very small fish is a candidate for so-called nano-aquariums, which are very small aquariums.
Decor: They don't need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.
Click here for more about aquarium gravel.
Live Plants are beautiful, improve the water quality, and are enjoyed by these Tetras.
Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended.
A Penguin 100B Filter in an aquarium with 10 to 20-gallons of water is just about right for these fish.

The addition of Lava Rocks will keep nitrates in the ideal range.
Click here to learn more about using Lava Rocks in aquariums.
Life Span: They'll live for several years with good water and good food. DrTom had several that lived with him for more than 10-years.
Gender: The females fill with eggs and become plumper, as they mature.
Breeding: Tetras scatter their eggs on plants or special breeding mops made of nylon yarn.
Popularity: This fish is rather new to aquariums, but has become popular, especially in small and nano aquariums.
Names: The scientific name is Hyphessobrycon roseus.
Variations: We haven't seen any.
